About Me

Sávio Vianna is a chemical engineer and professor at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil.

More recently he developed a novel porosity model for unstructured computational mesh applied in numerical explosion modelling . The research has earned global recognition because the model is the first to enable non-structured computational mesh to mimic the small scale geometry parametrising it via porosity. The research has been published as, _“Modified porosity approach and laminar flamelet modelling for advanced simulation of accidental explosions.”

He has also contributed in the field of gas dispersion by putting forward a novel model, namely DESQr (Diameter of Equivalent Simulation for Quick Run), that has been implemented in the framework of FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). The work also extended to the customisation of OpenFoam for gas dispersion modelling. Overarching themes of his research include explosion in chemical process areas, fire, gas dispersion, micro-fluidics and bio-fluid mechanics. Dr. Vianna has been also interested been also interested in the application of microfluidics for nano-material synthesis and fluid flow in the upper respiratory system using computational fluid dynamics. The application of high order numerical schemes can help to suppress the so called “numerical diffusion” which turns out to be a major problem in microfluidics.
